Maria Vovolini-Skepasthianou was born in 1880 in Athens. Of Cretan descent, she was the daughter of the freedom-fighter Georgios Skepasthianos, who settled in Athens in 1866 after the explosion of the Arkadi Monastery. In 1909, at the age of 29, she married the lawyer Antonios S. Vovolinis, with whom she had two sons, Spyros (1910) and Konstantinos (1913). They lived at 15 Mavrogenous Street in Patissia, where the magazine "Viomichaniki Epitheorissis" was initially housed.

After the death of her husband in 1921, she faced many financial difficulties and devoted herself to raising her children. Her elder son Spyros took on the family's burdens from a young age, and her relationship with her children was particularly close. Maria Vovolini-Skepasthianou loved her country and helped her sons distribute the magazine "Greek Blood" (1941-1944). She passed away on October 6, 1953, and her grave is located in the First Cemetery of Athens, where the family gathered for several years on the anniversary of her death.
